I didn’t realize it until two days later but I never should have said it. It was innocent enough. Just an off-handed comment. You’d think after 24 years our relationship could stand it. But, no. I took a block of frozen pork out of the freezer and said, “This freezer really works well”. One simple comment after 24 years of ownership.
Two days later, the ice maker is producing watery ice and the milk’s gone sour. I stick some thermometers in each side of the side-by-side. Instead of 0° and 35° I get back 25° and 50°. Well, shit.
I made the call to try to get it repaired. On a Sunday. And surprisingly, we find a service that agrees to send someone out. He does a cleanout and adds freon. The temp goes down a little. He says that if it’s not back to normal to send him a text in the morning. It wasn’t. We did. He came out again. This went on for awhile.
More that a week of visits from a service tech and $500 later, I thought that we were in the clear. It was back to 0° and 35°. It wasn’t making ice. The water was on, the solenoid was working, but water didn’t make it to the ice maker. My thought was that I could live without an ice-maker. I had before. I could again.
But two days later, everything was 25° and 50° again. So we ordered a new refrigerator.
